Teaching Course - Module 1 - Emmanuel, Plymouth, Devon
About this course:
Suitable for those who already teach bell handling and want to update their skills AND for those who have never taught anyone to handle a bell, Module 1 provides you with the skills and techniques necessary to take a ringer from their first lesson to having competent bell control.
You will learn through a mixture of practical and classroom sessions:
- How to teach a skill
- How to break down bell handling into easy stages that the new ringer can master
- About different learning types and how to adapt your teaching for them
- The benefits of intensive teaching
The practical sessions will give you plenty of time to practise your new skills in a safe environment. Working in pairs you will also have opportunity to hone your observation skills and get feedback on your feedback.
Lunch arrangements to be confirmed.

Phil Tremain
Course Tutor
Phil learned to ring aged 11 at St Columb Major, Cornwall where he has been tower captain for the past quarter of a century. He served the Truro DG as Public Relations Officer for over 30 years, and spent a three year term as President.
Despite having been teaching ringing for decades Phil firmly believes that there is always something new to learn. He is a full member of ART, having been accredited for Modules 1 & 2F; in recent years has become an ART Assessor, and now also a Tutor.
Early retirement after a career in IT left more time for bellringing, including convening the Kernow Old Codgers mid-week group. He also organises Pydar Improvers practices (affectionately known as PIMPS!) for ringers across the Pydar Deanery and beyond, and with the support of other teachers in the area recently registered the Pydar School of Bellringing as an ART teaching hub.
